The latest gossip: Reese Witherspoon arrest, new Fleetwood Mac music, The Shining sequel, Divinyls singer dies

FLEETWOOD MAC TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC

Iconic band Fleetwood Mac, currently selling out stadiums across the country, is “days away” from releasing an EP of new material, band member Lindsey Buckingham recently told a concert crowd. The EP is set to contain four new songs, three from Buckingham and one from Stevie Nicks. The songs have been finished for a while, but sources are saying delays have been due to disagreements within the band regarding artwork. (Fleetwood Mac bickering over a release…I know, practically unheard of, right?)

Sources also say Nicks is open to allowing Buckingham to produce her stuff again, as her previous producer Dave Stewart has fallen out of favor. Nicks also realizes the potential for more sales under the Fleetwood Mac moniker rather than as a solo artist.

By the way, did you know that the Eagles‘ 1977 single Life in the Fast Lane was written about Buckingham and Nicks? If you listen to the lyrics, you gain some interesting insight into Fleetwood Mac’s notoriously hedonistic lifestyle in the 70s. Check it out here!

REESE WITHERSPOON ARRESTED

reese-withoutherspoon“Do you know my name? You are about to find out who I am!”

That is what actress Reese Witherspoon (allegedly) said to the police officer who pulled her husband over for driving (allegedly) drunk Friday night. After getting into a verbal altercation with the officer, Reese was arrested for disorderly conduct, while her husband faces DUI charges.

“You’re gonna be on national news,” Witherspoon (allegedly) slurred at the officer. Ummm, I think Reese is actually getting all the attention today. She should be happy; this is the first time anyone has talked about her since she starred in Walk the Line back in 2005.

The actress released an apology, saying she was “deeply embarrassed about the things I said.”

We are embarrassed for you as well, Reese. It is always awkward when a falling star’s sense of entitlement is splashed all over the place.

“Do I know who you are? Why, of course! My grandmother loved you in Legally Blonde!”

AL MICHAELS ARRESTED

Wow, Friday was just not a good night for road-weaving celebrities. NBC sportscaster Al Michaels was pulled over in Santa Monica after pulling an illegal U-turn to try and escape a sobriety checkpoint (well played, Al).

The 20-year Sunday Night Football broadcasting veteran, who spent 30 years with ABC until 2006, was booked on suspicion of DUI and released a few hours later. His next court date is scheduled for June 26. NBC has yet to respond to the allegations.

At least the officer is rumored to have said the 68-year-old Michaels was “polite and cooperative” through the entire process. Are you listening, Reese?

STEPHEN KING WRITING SEQUEL TO THE SHINING

A release date has been set for Stephen King‘s newest project, Doctor Sleep, the highly anticipated sequel to his 1977 masterpiece The Shining. The book is due to hit bookshelves this September!

Doctor_SleepIn the sequel, a grown Danny Torrance is now working a nursing home. He still has powers of “shining,” and will become embroiled in a massive battle between good and evil, a la The Stand. My hopes are high for this project; King promises it will be a return to “balls-to-the-wall, keep-the-lights-on horror.”

Please, God, don’t let King be involved in ANY way when they make the film version. He ruins any movie project he gets involved with. And we can only hope that the horribly annoying actor who played Danny in the atrocious 1997 television version of The Shining will NOT be playing a grown Danny in the film version of Doctor Sleep.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOHN WATERS

Filmmaker John Waters, the one many of us see as the grandpappy of bad taste and low-budget genius, turns 66 today.

The cult film pioneer is wholly responsible for giving the world Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Hairspray (the quirky 80s film, not the cheesy, whitewashed toothpaste commercial masquerading as the musical version), and A Dirty Shame, among others. Unfortunately, plans to make another film have been derailed by lack of financing and studio support, and to date, 2004’s A Dirty Shame provides a perverted bookend to his film career. He has remained busy however, with the release of his book, Role Models, in 2011, and his stand-up performance career.

Happy Birthday to the old man who refuses to grow up!

DIVINYLS SINGER DIES AT AGE 53

Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer of the Divinyls, died in her New York home yesterday. Breast cancer and multiple sclerosis are blamed for the untimely passing.

chr2“She vigorously fought (these diseases) with exceptional bravery and dignity,” her husband said.

Chrissy gained worldwide notoriety in 1991 with the release of the Divinyls’ biggest hit, I Touch Myself. The early 90s were an exciting time for female singer/songwriters, with the musical industry’s shift toward strong, independent women. The raunchy I Touch Myself broke at just the right time. (Amphlett’s sultry gyrations didn’t hurt, either.)

Check it out here!

Amphlett also performed both film and stage work. I found this quote from Chrissy in 2012 to be very touching:

“You become sadly a patient in a world of waiting rooms, waiting sometimes hours for a result or an appointment. You spend a lot of time in cold machines, hospital beds, on your knees praying for miracles, operating rooms, tests after tests, looking at healthy people skip down the street like you once did and you took it all for granted and now wish you could do that. I have not stopped singing throughout all this in my dreams and to be once again performing and doing what I love to do.”

JUSTIN BIEBER

She was spotted in public kissing Selena Gomez…and that made national news. This just days after she (Justine, not Selena) visited the Anne Frank House and tweeted “Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”

I weep for the future.
