Where were you during the Cards’ 1982 World Series win?

was 10 years old when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in game seven of the nail-biter that came to be known as the “Suds Series” (St. Louis-Anheiser Busch, Milwaukee-Miller…get it?)

My friends and I watched in awe as the series did a back-and-forth, with the Cardinals catching an early lead before the Brewers stole the series back with three wins in a row, making game six a do-or-die for the Cards (sound familiar?)

Luckily, the Cards pulled it out in the last two games, winning the series and causing an uproar throughout St. Louis that I think has been unmatched in the years since. Whether that is because I was a less enamored adult during the 2006 World Series win against the Tigers, too focused on “grown-up” things to see the fervor, or that 1982 was just a special time for the team, I can’t say for sure.

So where were you from Oct. 12-20, 1982? Here are some points of reference to help you out:

#1 Song – John Cougar (later Mellencamp) – “Jack and Diane” (his most successful single)

Top-grossing Box Office MovieE.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (its 14th week at #1 during 1982)

#1 Bestseller – Stephen King, “Different Seasons” (the book that spawned later films “Stand By Me,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “Apt Pupil“)

1982 also was dominated by the television shows “Magnum P.I.,” “Alf” (yes, truly one of the worst shows ever to grace our television sets), and “Hill Street Blues.” “Dynasty” also was beginning its meteoric rise to the top of the soap opera heap in 1982.

The country was seeing the effects of a severe recession (also sound familiar?), and, in a prophetic glimpse into the future of the nation, Time magazine named The Computer as its Person of the Year.

I was playing Atari, and a lot of Atari (especially Yars’ Revenge), in 1982 (is that why my right thumb aches so often these days?).

So what were you doing during the 1982 World Series

  1. I was working as a Site Secretary at St. Louis Union Station during their renovation, and riding buses from St. Louis to Alton, and then driving my car on to Jerseyville, where I lived. Everyone at work and everyone almost on those buses had radios, and we all listened, yelled, cheered, booed, and whatever it took to cheer the Cardinals on. Black, white, yellow, whatever, there were NO strangers on those buses. We were ALL friends, sharing radios & rooting them on & rocking the place when they won. Good memory. Thanks for letting me share it.
